Welcome to Day 12 of #NJ12DaysOfAuthors (May) Series! @Pdoggbiker #Cherries @RRBC_Org @RRBC_RWISA @Tweets4RWISA #RRBC

Having just watched an amazing play where the single actor portrayed eleven characters in such a way you felt like you were there in Vietnam with them, John Podlaski’s interview drew me straight to his wonderful website. His book CHERRIES is next on my TBR list. We rarely hear the truth from those who’d been there. On this Memorial Day, don’t we owe it to ourselves?

Can The Writing Gene Be Passed Down Through DNA?

What an interesting question! Jan Sikes is one of my favorite authors. Be sure to check out some of her books. Who knows? Our grandkids may be reading some of her granddaughter’s books in the future…

Author Jan Sikes's avatarStory Empire

Hello, SE’ers! This is Jan Sikes, and I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to post my first blog on this site. It is truly an honor to join such a diverse and talented group of writers. Today I want to talk about a topic that I’ve had on my mind a lot lately as I watch my granddaughter grow and develop a talent.

CAN THE WRITING GENE BE HEREDITARY?

This is a question I have pondered, as I watch my nine-year-old granddaughter craft stories. She has quite the imagination and can sit down and churn out a short story in no time. Her latest was about a nine-year-old girl named Cleo, who discovers that she is a direct descendant of Cleopatra. The little girl, Cleo, also finds that she has secret powers. I was amazed when I read it. Needless to say, it is in…

WRITING AND EMOTIONS

If you want a great read, pick up one of my friend D.L. Finn’s books. They have plenty of emotional content to keep your interest. Here, she shares how important that is.

Hi SEers! Denise here to talk about emotions and writing.

Last month was National Poetry Month, and I celebrated it by reading poems. Most of the poetry books I read evoked emotions from me. Those that did not, I stopped reading. I didn’t feel wonder, anger, amusement, fear, curiousity, sadness, or hope. It left me with nothing because I wasn’t emotionally invested.

With poetry, there are a limited number of words to capture the reader’s attention. A poet has the hard task of doing this immediately. When I’m reading, I must feel something, even uncomfortable, and it has to be within the first couple of lines.

This got me thinking about fictional writing. Do these same emotions pull me into the story? They do. Like any good relationship with people, I have to care about the poem or story. Otherwise, I move…

Several days ago, I receive a Twitter notification on my phone: Lee MacMillan, Instagram Influencer, Dead by Suicide at 28…

I am not an Instagram user and I wasn’t familiar with the name Lee MacMillan until I received this notification. Always curious as to the reasons people decide to take their own lives, I took a seat on my chaise to read through the story in its entirety. The more I read, the more I wanted to know about Lee MacMillan.

By all accounts, she was a beautiful young girl, who could have easily been anyone’s daughter — even mine. I watched her videos on YouTube, again, wanting to know as much as I could about this beautiful young flower who felt that the only way out {of her pain} was to end her life.

Since the pandemic began, we are hearing more and more about mental illness…

THE UNCERTAINTY OF LIFE … @RRBC_Org @RRBC_RWISA @Tweets4RWISA @nonniejules #RRBC #RWISA #Poetry #writingcommunity #readingcommunity

This poem by Nonnie Jules moved me today. Life IS uncertain from our limited perspective, but when we choose God and, like Nonnie, thank Him for each new day, we can be certain that He will never leave us no matter what happens in life.

RaveReviewsbyNJ's avatarWatch Nonnie Write!

This morning I opened my eyes, rolled out of bed onto the floor, and onto my knees, to pray.  This is a morning and nightly ritual in our family.  My kids are adults now, but the last thing I say to them at night is, “Say your prayers, on your knees.”

I always begin my prayer with … “Thank you, Lord, for waking me up this morning … “ but after saying those words this morning, my prayer was cut short as I jumped up and ran to my desk to pen the piece below.  (By the way, I did return to finish my morning prayer).

THE UNCERTAINTY OF LIFE

We lie down, but we don’t know if we’re going to wake up.

We leave the house, without the certainty that we’ll ever return.

We get behind the wheel of a car

Not to go far…

Just a few blocks…
