I grew up in a military family. We lived in Germany and Italy during my preteen and teen years, where books were my main source of alone-time entertainment. We had no TV, and electronics were the stuff of science fiction. I traveled a lot, attended German and Italian schools for a time, and developed a keen curiosity and active imagination.
